I've analyzed every NFL Season from 1920 through 1966, and from '89 through present. So far, by my measure, the '66 Giants defense is the worst ever.

KJ, thanks for the clarification. The 72 points is the most ever in a regular season game.

You make a misstatement. Most points scored in an NFL Game is, of course, the Bears in the 73-0 defeat of the 'Skins in the '40 Championship Game.

Michael,

That must have been awesome to be at that game. I first read about it as a kid and was amazed by the point total. You are right, I am surprised that it has stayed the record this long. I guess defenses are a little bit better or teams don't kick field goals on the last play of the game like Graham did.

It was the first football game I ever attended. It was like watching a tennis match. Actually, I'm kinda suprised that the point total record has held for this long.

Art,

You are right, Stan Jones was with the Redskins that season finishing out his career after 12 seasons with the Bears.

According to the rosters on Football Reference, there were 6 future Hall of Famers on rosters for that game, all with the Redskins.

They were: Sonny Jurgensen, Charley Taylor, Bobby Mitchell, Stan Jones, Sam Huff and Paul Krause. The Redskins also had a Hall of Famer as their coach in Otto Graham. The team also had Chris Hanburger, who many believe should be in the HOF.

The Giants did not have any Hall of Fame players left on their roster in 1966, but they did have a number of notable veterans in the final years of their careers on the team including Del Shofner, Dick Lynch, Jim Katcavage and Jimmy Patton. The Giants also had a young defensive player that would go on to a distinguished career in Spider Lockhart.

As for Stan Jones, he was indeed one of the finest linemen of his era and versatile enough to play both offense and defense at a time when doing so was no longer the norm in the NFL. We plan to feature Stan in our "Vintage Athlete of the Week" segment on our Chicago specific site (<a href="http://chicago.sportsthenandnow.com)" target="_blank">http://chicago.sportsthenandnow.com)</a> in the next few weeks. I am glad to hear that he is still doing well.

Thanks for your comments. I hope you keep checking out the site and our many articles remembering the greats of the past.

Stan Jones played in that game. I believe there were many future hall of famers in that game. How many? You tell me. Stan is alive and well in Colorado and has many friends there.
