World Cup Update: Argentina Looks For Goals

Posted on July 01, 2010 by Thomas Rooney

Maradona and his squad will be looking for goals in their quarterfinal match with Germany.

Both Argentina and Germany will be going into their quarter final clash full of confidence. Germany completely demolished England, in their second round match. Argentina came through last 16 match against Mexico, in a match they dominated, they won 3-1.

After previously not scoring in the tournament, Carlos Tevez scored two goals, his first was clearly offside but given none the less. His second was a touch of genius, from the Manchester City striker, a stunning effort from the edge of the area.

Scoring hasn’t been a problem for Argentina, Messi hasn’t even got in on the act yet and his team have already scored 10 goals. Gonzalo Higuain scored his fourth goal of the tournament against the Mexicans and World cup quarter finals betting pundits are suggesting he could add to this against the Germans.

The defence doesn’t look too shabby either, only conceding three goals so far in South Africa as Argentina has breezed into the quarter-finals. Should they keep their form up, they are a good shout when it comes to world cup final betting too.

With Maradona in charge of the side, the focus was always going to be to play attacking football and its working. His team are the top scorers in the competition so far. Maradona has managed to get Lionel Messi playing more like he does at Barcelona, something that previous managers had failed to do.

Although he hasn’t scored yet, Messi has been one of his team’s best players. It’s only down to superhero goalkeeping and bad luck that Messi hasn’t found the net yet. In this tournament, the Argentinean wonder-boy has cemented his place as the world’s best player, ahead of Ronaldo and Rooney.

Not many people thought Maradona’s Argentina would be challenging this World Cup, only scraping automatic qualification on the final day in their South American group. So far he has proved them overwhelmingly wrong, and has looked as though he’s enjoyed every minute of it.
