Tips on How to Start Winning at Poker

Posted on August 05, 2020 by Emily Johnson

Losing is never fun and especially not if it costs a lot of money. In poker, there is a word for bad players, namely fish. This article IndiaGamblers highlighted four simple tips on how to start winning at online poker and stop being a fish.

  1. Dare to lie down

There is something called premium hands and they are the strongest hands. These are the dressed cards. For example; ace and ace, king and king, queen and queen, ace and king (of the same suit) or jack and jack. Since there are 169 different starting hands in Texas hold’em (apart from color combinations), it is important to learn when to continue and when to bet. If you were sitting with premium hands and no player before you has raised, you can keep them. Keep in mind, however, that if someone raises or calls in front of you, it may be better to lie down if you are not sitting with aces and kings. This means that if you play Texas hold’em, you should place 80% more hands than you play.

2. Position

Where you choose to place yourself at the table is very important and is also called position. This means that if you are the player who is last at the table, it is you who decides how big the pot will be. In addition, it is easier to calculate the opponents and thus also facilitate even bluffing. Position is especially important when playing Texas hold’em.

3. Calculation

When it comes to Texas hold’em, it’s important that you learn to count outs. To be able to do that, you must first know the poker hand ranking by heart. The more you practice learning different outs, the easier it will be. The cards that can give you the best hand are outs. It is important that you try to read the table and see if there are opportunities for different winning combinations.

4. Odds

Texas hold’em is an odds game and you will therefore be faced with statistics, probability and odds. You do not have to be a math professional as long as you understand pot odds and equity.

Pot odds means how much you get from the pot to call. If $ 20 is in the pot and your opponent bets $ 10, this means you will be offered $ 30 for $ 10. Which is 30:10. To facilitate your calculation, it is easier to calculate so the right side is equal to 1. So 10/10 = 1 and this means that you also need to divide 30 by 10, which means that the pot odds are 3: 1.

Equity is the chance you have to win compared to your opponents. You start by multiplying the number of outs by four if the game is on the flop, or by two if it is on the turn. This will show the percentage you have a good chance of winning the pot. If you have a suit, for example, then you have nine outs on the flop, which means 9 × 4 = 36, 36%, chance of getting the best hand. This will help you understand how much chance you have of winning.
