How to Get Started in Kiteboarding

Posted on September 21, 2020 by Martin Banks

Kiteboarding combines two of our favorite sports — waterboarding and parasailing — into one adrenaline-fueled blast. It’s amazing to watch experienced kiteboarders fly across the water, using wind and waves to launch themselves high into the air. Getting on one of those boards, on the other hand, can be incredibly intimidating. Here’s how to get started and enjoy the sport to the fullest.

Look Into Lessons

Don’t try to get into kiteboarding on your own. You can buy the equipment and head out to the beach, and you might even get moving. However, unless you’re very lucky, you’re probably going to end up in the emergency room. It’s best to seek an experienced instructor and take some lessons before exploring the world of kiteboarding.

Don’t Skimp on Equipment

They say you get what you pay for, and that goes double for kiteboarding equipment. Don’t cheap out when you start buying needed supplies. The last thing you need is a harness snapping at full tension or some other item failing when you need it the most. If you’re going to buy your own equipment, opt for the best you can afford.

Consider Insurance

Even with experience, kiteboarding can be a dangerous sport. That’s the point, isn’t it? You don’t get that thrill of adrenaline without a little bit of danger. Standard insurance likely won’t cover injuries suffered while kiteboarding. You might want to consider picking up kiteboarding insurance to protect yourself in case of injury. Your policy may also cover harm caused to people you accidentally run into on the beach while practicing.

Study the Weather

Not all weather is created equal when it comes to kiteboarding. One strong gust or lightning strike can mean the difference between a fun experience and a trip to the emergency room. Learn to analyze the wind and weather, and keep a close eye on how they change throughout the day. That way, you can enjoy your time kiteboarding without worrying about a storm catching you off-guard or a thunderstorm chasing you from the water.

Practice, Practice, Practice

As with any new skill, you won’t be an expert kiteboarder overnight. You’ll have to start small and work your way up to large kites and massive tricks. Don’t rush or try to match skills with the experienced kiteboarders you’ll see on the beach. You will hurt yourself. Take the time to practice and master new moves slowly. You may still end up with an injury now and then, but they’ll be significantly less than they might be if you don’t rush in before you’re ready.

Have Fun Out There

Kiteboarding might look intimidating to the inexperienced, but it can be an awesome way to spend the afternoon. Make sure you take your time learning new skills, seek an experienced instructor and make sure you’re stocked up on a good waterproof sunscreen. Keep these things in mind, and you’ll be sure to enjoy the experience instead of ending up in the emergency room.
