Looking for a New Hobby? How to Get Started With ATV Off-roading

Posted on October 15, 2021 by Brooke Chaplan

Off-roading on an ATV is one of the most rewarding and exciting ways to experience nature. Whether you’re new to the hobby or just want to try something new, there are plenty of ways to make off-roading your new passion and hobby, all it takes is a little information and inspiration! Here are four ways to make ATV off-roading your next hobby:

Research Off-Roading Vehicles

Pick up a magazine or search online for information about off-roading vehicles. Read reviews to find out which four-wheel drive and off-road machines consumers favor for their reliability, comfort, capability, and value. Think about these factors as you decide which type of vehicle and ATV accessories are best for your needs. Some accessories can improve performance, while others are great for maximizing safety. Determine your needs as you search for ATV equipment.

For example, if you’re going to use your ATV mostly on weekends in rough terrain, a four-wheel-drive machine with good suspension will hold up better than a two-wheel-drive model designed for smooth backcountry trails. If money is an issue, do some research on used models before you buy new ones so that you can get maximum value out of your purchase. These vehicles will also likely be cheaper to maintain over time.

Prepare for the Dangers of Off-Roading

Off-roading means getting outside, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re safe. While out on an ATV or other off-road vehicle, it’s possible to get lost in nature and succumb to some of its dangers. Rattlesnakes, bees, spiders, and even bears can all be found in remote areas and you don’t want to stumble upon any of them unprepared.

Make sure you protect yourself against an emergency by having medical materials on hand. Pack some basic first aid supplies like bandages and antiseptic wipes; that way if you get stung or bitten by something, you can be treated on-site.

Decide Whether to Rent or Own an Off-Road Vehicle

If you’re new to ATV riding, one of your first decisions will be whether to rent or buy an off-road vehicle. When it comes to buying, there are plenty of options. You can opt for a brand-new 4-wheeler, though it’s possible to spend more than $20,000 on these machines.

Alternatively, you can buy used. It’s not hard to find all-terrain vehicles for sale online for less than $1,000. Used machines typically have low mileage and are in decent condition. Moreover, used vehicles are generally considered better by off-road enthusiasts since they have been tested before your purchase.

ATV off-roading may just be your new passion in the coming year. If you’re going to make ATV off-roading your new hobby, you’ll want to make sure you follow these four tips to make sure you stay safe and have fun.
