Avoiding Disaster When Traveling For An Away Game

Posted on November 13, 2024 by John Harris

If you’re planning to catch as much of your team’s games as you can, or you simply want to make sure you catch a big one when it comes along, then it’s likely going to mean traveling to an away game at some point. This takes a little more planning than the usual home game, so how do you make sure you avoid any obstacles and have the time and energy to really enjoy it?

Expect to Stay Overnight

When planning to attend an away game, booking accommodation in advance is often necessary, especially for high-profile matches. Sports events bring in fans from far and wide, which means hotels and vacation rentals near the stadium often sell out quickly. Even if the stadium is within a reasonable driving distance, consider staying overnight to avoid exhaustion from traveling after a high-energy game. Look for nearby accommodations that offer flexible check-in and check-out times to allow for ease before and after the game. Alternatively, you can look into local hostels or even fan communities where accommodations may be available.

Familiarize Yourself with the Area Around the Stadium

Understanding the stadium’s surrounding area can greatly enhance your game day experience. Spend some time researching nearby amenities, such as restaurants, convenience stores, and restrooms. Stadiums are often situated near entertainment districts or local attractions, so plan some time to explore before or after the game. Visiting a local bar or fan zone can also add to the experience, allowing you to interact with fellow fans and feel the excitement of the pre-game atmosphere. Make sure to know your entry gate, the layout of the stadium, and any rules or policies that might affect your visit.

Be Mindful and Secure with Your Belongings

Security can be tight on game days, so plan to secure your belongings safely. Consider placing extra bags or non-essential items in secure luggage storage locations rather than carrying them with you to the stadium. Carry a small, zippered bag or wallet that you can keep on your person at all times. Important items like your tickets, phone, and a small amount of cash should be easily accessible but secure. Many stadiums have strict bag policies, so check these in advance to avoid any last-minute issues. Keeping things light and secure allows you to focus on enjoying the game.

Find Parking Space in Advance

Parking can be one of the trickiest aspects of attending an away game, especially at a popular stadium. Avoid last-minute parking hassles by researching parking options well ahead of time. Many stadiums have official parking lots that offer reservations, so check if you can secure a spot online. If stadium parking is limited, explore nearby parking garages or lots within walking distance, and take note of public transportation options that can serve as backups. Leaving your car in a safe, confirmed spot ensures you can relax and get to the game without worrying about finding parking in a rush.

You want to give the game your all as a supporter, so make sure that there are no issues with accommodation, parking, or logistics well in advance of arriving at the stadium.
