Tiger Woods: A Retrospective

Posted on March 03, 2021 by Susan Melony

A few days ago, those who turned on ESPN watched as it became the all-Tiger-Woods network. The channel temporarily shelved shows like Around the Horn. In their place were images of a rental vehicle flipped over on its back and shattered glass strewn across a wooded clearing.

Tiger Woods was in that rented vehicle, driving down a California road, when he lost control and flew into the trees. It was a single-car accident. Early reports indicated that he would live, though reporters spoke in hushed tones about his suspected broken legs.

Many thought about the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash from last year, which claimed not only Bryant’s life but also that of his teenage daughter, Gianna. As it became clear that Woods would live, you could almost hear the sports world take a unified sigh of relief.

As Woods recovers, now is as good of a time as any to think about what he means to golf and the sports world as a whole.

What Sports Mean

Getting away from Woods for a moment, we should go over what sports mean within our society. Think of this statistic: about 21.5 million children between age 6 and 17 years old play team sports.

Golf is not a team sport, but you get the idea. Sports are a widespread pastime, and with good reason. Kids that play them often do better in school, and they get fresh air and exercise. They are less likely to have obesity issues.

It’s not surprising at all, then, when kids idolize sports stars. They see individuals doing the same thing that they do, but at a higher level. They see adults playing a game and making millions of dollars.

Key Football Skills for Midfielders and Drills to Improve Them

Posted on February 26, 2021 by Rudy

Midfielders are the players in a team that have a key role in implementation of designed tactics. These players have huge responsibility in judi bola and must possess a wide range of skills in order to ensure fluid play and hold the control over the ball. Midfielders must work constantly to improve these skills. What are the key skills and how can the midfielders improve them?

Passing

Passing is the ability of a player to pass the ball to a teammate’s feet or into an empty space. Precision is necessary for the successful performance of passing in football. With a right passing game, the team maintains possession of the ball and conquers the space towards the opponent’s goal, and creates a chance to score. It is essential for a midfielder to be able to make both a short and a long pass as well as a pass into an empty space.

The drill that can improve passing skills for midfielders is passing by numbers. The players organize themselves into two groups of six or eight players, with each one of them having the number from one to six or eight. Both groups occupy the same space and limited area on the training field. The goal is to pass the ball in numerical order. The focus is to move around all the time, and not to stand in place. This creates a more complicated environment for players. As the players must move around and among themselves, this drill enhances the demand of developing appropriate vision of the play and effective communication between them.

Ball control

Ball control is the ability of a player successfully to control the ball with different parts of the body, such as the feet, legs, chest or head. Great ball control will allow the player to retain possession of the ball, successfully protecting it from opponents. This is a crucial part of the ball possession game. It will also allow them to improve their dribbling abilities.

The most effective exercise to improve control of the ball is to move the ball between the cones. Arrange a few cones in a row, or in a scattered manner, and run with the ball between and around them. The ball can be controlled either only with a dominant foot or with non-dominant foot, or with both. Players should practice doing this drill as fast as possible, and with different parts of the foot.

Origins of Road Cycling & Bike Racing

Posted on February 24, 2021 by Tyler Tafelsky

The history of cycling and bike racing extends as far as the early 1800s when a German baron named Karl von Drais designed and built the first steerable, two-wheeled bicycle in 1817. Drais, who is widely recognized as the father of the bicycle, earned a variety of names for what is widely known as “bike” today, including “draisine,” “hobby-horse,” “velocipede,” and “running machine,” according to historian author, Evan Andrews

What started as a tool used by the wealthy soon evolved for many users and purposes, largely thanks to a myriad of other inventors that progressed bicycling, particularly bike racing. Bikes were mostly used for transportation and traveling during the first few decades before 1868 when the first cycling sporting event took place, which was held in Hendon, Middlesex.

These oddly-shaped riding machines exploded in popularity throughout the 1870s and 1880s. This period marks the rise of the first bike races and riding clubs. Helping blow up the popularity of bikes, English cyclist Thomas Stevens road around the globe in 1884. Soon after, interest in the two-wheeled contraptions grew, and by the 1890s, a major bike boom swept over both Europe and the United States.
