The 4 Major Sports Teams In Philadelphia.
For years, the thought of Philadelphia as a sports city was unheard of and rare by national fanatics. Now, with the recent surge from the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, and possibly even the Sixers, Philadelphia is finally becoming known to the sports nation.
We’ll start with the Philadelphia Phillies, baseball’s best team. With only 2 championships in hand, the Phillies reputation is diminished and scarce. In 2008, doubters were quieted after a postseason field day was brought to the city of brotherly love, with the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to win the 2008 World Series. After a year of heartbreak, the Phillies are back for more. At 74-39, Philadelphia is completely destroying Major League Baseball, and a 9.5 division lead over the Braves is showing it. With a more than solid pitching rotation, including Hamels, Halladay, Oswalt, Lee and outstanding rookie Vance Worley, Philadelphia has a 3.06 team ERA. Recently acquiring OF Hunter Pence from Houston solidifies the lineup and brings more power and consistency for the postseason. For the Phillies, it can’t get better than this.
Now we turn to the Eagles, a team getting national attention for the big named players recently acquired by the organization. Philadelphia was keen on defense, bringing in CB Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie, CB Nnamdi Asomaugha, and DE Jason Babin along with shipping out unhappy QB Kevin Kolb in the process. Don’t forget the pickup of QB Vince Young, which is solid security for the injury plagued, mobile Quarterback Michael Vick. With Desean Jackson ending his holdout, and WR Jeremy Maclin getting healthy, Philadelphia has emerged as the team to beat. Granted, the season hasn’t even started yet, but the Birds new look is hard to argue against. I’m not sure with the “Dream Team” phrase that has rumored around the city of brotherly love, but a Playoff Caliber team is surely in store for the Eagles. Read the rest of this entry →

David Ferrer will look to break the hold of the "big three" in men's tennis.
Ignoring Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal in the build-up to the US Open might seem like tennis heresy, but it’s a worthy gambit, if only to turn the spotlight on the other players in the top ten of the ATP World Singles Rankings.
Spain’s David Ferrer, for example, is ranked sixth in the world, but is 80/1 in the US Open 2011 tennis odds, making him a rank outsider.
However, Ferrer reached the semi-final at the Australian Open, earlier this year and recently guided Spain to victory against the USA in the Davis Cup, where he beat world number nine Mardy Fish in the longest four-set match in the tournament’s history.
Ferrer has a supporter in Roger Federer, who referred to the Spaniard as “the best returner in the game […], together with Nadal”. Read the rest of this entry →

The faces of the future...Milos Raonic, for one.
It stands to reason that the term “dark horse” originates from the world of horse racing.
For those betting on the outcome, it meant that setting odds became difficult when a horse was not known to gamblers.
Today, in the world of sports or politics, it signifies that a person who was not well known emerged as a winner––an unexpected winner.
So while Juan Martin del Potro may not be a “favorite” entering the 2011 U.S. Open, the Argentine cannot be regarded as a “dark horse” because he is well-known in Flushing Meadows.
Del Potro won the US Open title in 2009.
True “dark horses” are not widely known by the general viewing public because they are relatively new on the tennis scene.
These young players have not made much of a name for themselves––yet.
To date, there are six young guns ready to make their way to the top of the men’s game.
They will become the “dark horses” in the upcoming US Open, representing the future of tennis on the men’s side of the draw.

Serena Williams will look for a return to glory at the U.S. Open.
Despite many writing off her chances of getting to the top of women’s tennis once again, Serena Williams has spoken about her positive preparations for the US Open next month.
The younger Williams sister has fallen to number 175 in the world after an early exit from Wimbledon coming on the back of a year or so of constant injury problems.
Her target is clear now though. She wants to get herself fit and ready for the US Open. She was perhaps running on adrenaline and determination at Wimbledon, at Flushing Meadows she wants to be in a better state to win the tournament.
Speaking about her preparations, she said: “It was really awful to miss the Open last year. My goal is to make sure I’m really fit. It’s the longest I’ve taken ever taken off from tennis, so it’s a challenge.” Read the rest of this entry →

Though ranked number one in the world, Caroline Wozniacki is still looking for her first Grand Slam title.
The world number one Caroline Wozniacki is one of the most consistent performers in the sport, winning 17 WTA titles, which is why she is ranked so highly. However, that ever elusive Grand Slam title is yet to become a reality. If she is to win a Grand Slam, it looks like the US Open is the Dane’s best opportunity. Anyone looking at the Betfair Men’s US Open betting odds may find it slightly ridiculous that you can have a world number one who hasn’t won a grand slam.
Wozniacki came closest to Grand Slam glory in 2009 at Flushing Meadows, reaching the final only to lose out to the returning Kim Clijsters 7-5, 6-3. The next year saw Wozniacki come in among the favourites, only to be upset in the semi finals by Vera Zvonareva. Read the rest of this entry →

Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic Wins Wimbledon
Who has not heard the news? A whole new era is afoot in women’s tennis.
Considering the players who captured headlines and the attention of tennis pundits during the second week of the 2011 Wimbledon Championships – you quickly surmised that the usual suspects were missing in action.
Gone was defending champion Serena Williams who had held the Rosewater Dish aloft four times, hoping that 2011 would bring her five.
Another Wimbledon win would tie Serena with her older sister Venus Williams who had won the All England Club Championship five times. Venus was also no longer in the house.
Absent, too, were French Open champion Li Na, who lost in the second round in a fierce contest as well as the No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki who failed again to make the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
No. 2 ranked Kim Clijsters never checked in for Championships, still sidelined with an ankle injury.
That left the field wide open for a newly invigorated Maria Sharapova, the wide-eyed power game of German Sabine Lisicki, the finely-honed game of Victoria Azarkena and the excellent grass-court assault of Petra Kvitova. It was a worthy fortnight – an ultimate contrast in competence and mental fortitude.
The “Power Rankings” are compiled and presented by JA Allen, Marianne Bevis and Feng Rong using . We present the periodic rankings at least four times a year.
Following are the latest top ten in our women’s tennis power rankings as determined at the conclusion of the 2011 Wimbledon Championships in London.
