Why People Aren’t Using Your Sports Hall

Posted on April 14, 2025 by John Harris

You want as many people to use your sports hall as possible, whether you run a club, a fitness business, or a school. But the problem is that many of these spaces go underutilised. People simply don’t use them as much as you might like.

Fortunately, this post is here to help. It runs through some of the reasons why people aren’t using your sports halls and what you can do about this situation.

No, there are no perfect answers to this conundrum. But there are things you can do to swing the situation in your favor.

Here’s what’s going wrong for you and what you can do about it:

Inconvenient Scheduling

One issue that affects many clubs and outfits that maintain sports halls is inconvenient scheduling. They’re open at times when their customers are unavailable.

The best way around this problem is to simply change your timetable. The best opening times are early morning and the evening since these allow you to work with people outside of regular office hours. You’ll also want to open at weekends, however inconvenient it may seem.

High Costs

Another factor working against you might be your high costs. Most people don’t like it when regular sports halls charge a lot of money for what they perceive as a basic service. Yes, your expenses might be high, but higher prices may prevent you from getting the volume of people through the door you require.

Therefore, look for ways around this problem. See if lowering prices increases your overall take home pay through additional sign ups. If you’re not in a premium location, don’t charge premium prices.

Outdated Facilities

Many sports halls also fall down on the fact that they have outdated or limited facilities. These can annoy clients and cause them to look elsewhere for better options.

Therefore, check your sports hall vinyl flooring and see if it is up to scratch. Make sure that everything is neat and tidy, and doesn’t look tatty.

Also, run through your equipment and ensure it offers everything that clients or fitness enthusiasts need. Many sports halls don’t realise just what their clients want from them.

Finally, if there is any decrepit equipment, remove it and replace it with something new.

Limited Activity Options

You could also explore whether your schedule offers your clients everything they want. Many sports halls fall into the problem of offering their clients essentially the same services every week without changing things or experimenting with what works.

Therefore, see if there are any new classes your customers might like. Explore your options and look for what’s popular in the local area, whether Bikram yoga or spin classes.

No Community Vibe

Finally, sports halls can sometimes go underused because they don’t encourage a community vibe. There’s no sense of belonging or being part of something greater.

Fortunately, you can fix that with some simple branding. Adjusting how you communicate with your audience is critical if you want them to respect you and want to continue working with you.
