Tips on Buying the Best Portable Pitching Mounds

Posted on October 25, 2019 by Kevin King

A good portable pitching mound can turn any ol’ field into a baseball field, and any player into a pitcher.

What are Portable Mounds?

Pitching mounds were originally created so that pitchers would have a competitive advantage over batters. Being elevated 10” off the ground gives you the slight advantage of gravity, and gives the batter a harder time of getting a hit. If the pitcher were to pitch from flat ground, there would be a lot more home runs every game!

Because pitching mounds are so regularly used, in youth baseball and in the MLB, it is absolutely imperative that kids start pitching from a mound at an early age.

The creator of True Pitch Mounds started making portable mounds when his son pitched in a championship game and gave up runs due to the fact that he was not used to pitching from a mound!

If your kids are not used to pitching from a mound, and pitch an important game on a field that has a raised pitching mound, they won’t know how to adapt. This is what makes portable mounds so important!

Tips on Selecting the Best Portable Mounds

Color: From our experience, we have noticed that clay mounds are the best and most popular option for any field. Some people like green, but clay is the natural color of a pitching mound, and it usually looks best on any field.

Safety: When looking for a mound, safety should be a top concern. Nowadays, there are cheap mounds that are made with wood or cheap materials from China that deteriorate quickly and create soft spots in the mound. If the pitcher’s foot lands on a soft spot, they may twist their ankle or injure themselves in some way.

Also beware that the lip on the edges of the mound are as flush with the ground as possible. If the lip is sticking up, the pitcher may trip over it and injure themselves. A mound with tapered edges is the safest way to go!

Durability: Ask your retailer what the mound is made out of before buying! If it’s made with wood, it’s probably not a good investment. If it’s made with reinforced fiberglass, then you should be okay.

Also, make sure the top of the mound is coated with durable turf that is resistant to spikes.

P.S. No mounds is 100% spike proof, so your kids should be wearing plastic spikes on the portable mound anyway!
