For Volleyball Players Wearing The Right Gear Is Key 2

Posted on March 01, 2016 by Daniel Bailey

Olympic volleyballVolleyball is a high-level, intense game that demands swift decisions and frequently requires players to jump, dive and bend in a variety of complex manners. Along with other protective and practical clothing, volleyball players regularly wear specialty spandex shorts to reduce friction between the floor and their bodies. In fact, wearing spandex shorts enhances comfort and increases security on the court. The material allows a player to move with the flow of the game without needing to adjust their clothing. It also provides more freedom of motion without the concern of loss of integrity around the waist.

Many times, a volleyball player will dive for the ball. Form-fitting spandex permits sliding and offers protection from the hardwood floor. Traditional shorts could conceivably ride up and result in painful burns from the court.

Spandex is an ideal material for volleyball players because it allows freedom of movement without restricting the player. Spandex shorts provide better movement on the floor and give you the ability to get up quickly off the ground and continue playing. They also make sprinting, jumping, lunging, and diving all around the court effortless.

Other highlights and benefits of specialty spandex volleyball shorts include:

  • Soft, durable, lightweight and comfortable material
  • Stretch up to 600 percent and return to original shape
  • Form-fitting quality
  • Does not break down from exposure to perspiration, body oils or sunscreen
  • Wicks away moisture and sweat from skin
  • Keeps players cool, dry and reduces the risk of chafing
  • Spandex shorts come in an array of colors and patterns so can be matched with team colors easily

As with any sport, it’s important to wear clothing that will allow you to play the game without having to worry about comfort or injuries. Specialty clothing can help players to look stylish while remaining practical and reducing the risk of injury.

After waiting for 45 years after his retirement, the Sports Then and Now Vintage Athlete of the Month is finally taking his rightful place as a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Before injuries cut short his Hall of Fame worthy career, Tony Oliva was one of the best hitters in baseball and combined with Hall of Famers Rod Carew and Harmen Killebrew to make the Minnesota Twins a perennial American League contender during the late 1960s.

Discovered on the baseball fields of Cuba by a Minnesota Twin scout, Oliva came to the United States in 1961 and within three years the American League Rookie of the Year. There have been many great MLB players from Cuba, including a new generation of stars today, but it is hard to argue that there has been a better player from the island in MLB than Oliva.
