In a huge trade made February 1, the St Louis Athletica acquired the first pick in the February 4 Los Angeles Sol Dispersal Draft after sending three players to the Atlanta Beat in exchange.

The Athletica will send defender Kia McNeill, midfielder Angie Kerr (Woznuk), the rights to third round draft choice Amanda Poach, as well as Athletica’s second round draft choice in the dispersal draft (9th overall).

St. Louis will gain Atlanta’s number one overall draft pick in the dispersal draft, as well as the Beat’s second round pick in the 2011 WPS Draft.

Head Coach Jorge Barcellos responded to WPS media regarding the trade. “We were presented with an opportunity to make our club better…We gave up some talented young players to do this. I want to thank Kia and Angie for the hard work that they did last season. They were a big part of the success that the Athletica enjoyed in our first year.”

Going into the dispersal draft on Thursday, the Athletica will now have the two picks in the first round, #1 and #8. They also will have one selection at the end of the third round with the 24th pick.

Kia McNeill started 17 of the 19 games she appeared in for St. Louis. The Boston College graduate was an anchor in the Athletica defensive line. Angie Kerr started all 18 games she appeared in, and was second on the team in minutes played with 1,577. Amanda Poach, of Santa Clara University, was selected 26th overall in the WPS draft last month.
